Late last month Facebook rolled out an update to the Facebook Nearby app. For those of you who were a tad too busy with the December celebrations to notice the revamped features, here they are in a nutshell.
1) Local businesses are now sorted by relevancy. Similar to how stories are ranked in your news feed, places are ordered by, taking into consideration, the number of friends who’ve Liked the business, checked in, provided a text recommendation, or star rating.
2) Users can also now easily search, the location directory by name or browse by category and sub-category. So whether you’re searching for a Hotel or Ice cream Shop , a Thai restaurant or an electronics retailer the app returns the available options.
Do note that results display a range of business details including name, category, address, distance, available amenities , as well as a list of friends who Like it and the star rating and more.
What does this mean for you as a local business who hasn’t ventured into the world of Facebook? 2013 is definitely the time for you to get on board, register your location and actively encourage fan check ins and recommendations. After all with friends now able to influence each other via this additional mobile touch point, Facebook Nearby, and the value of a friend’s recommendation over that of a stranger, the potential value to your local business is significant.
