Spam: I need more spam like I need a hole in the head
Recently I've been receiving a lot more spam than usual. My yahoo mailbox is inundated with the stuff, but luckily yahoo is pretty good at identifying it and sending it into oblivion a.k.a my spam folder. But now even my @pixldinc account is under daily fire.

Inbox Under Fire

The most recent culprit actually made it into my inbox. An email advising me of a sale at a store I had never shopped at and worse it was an all male clothing store. I can hear the naysayers now so let me set the record straight. Yep I'm married but we prefer not to shop locally as male clothing is not only unbelievably expensive but there usually is an issue with the size and fit, but I digress.

Wrong on Many Levels

I checked the newsletter and actually saw that it was a PR firm sending out the email blast on behalf of its client. My initial reaction was I didn't sign up for this list. Then I began to ponder how my email got added to the list. Have I sent an email to you in a past life, do you have my business card? Did you just take emails that had been accessed by any means necessary and added them to the blast? Because that is so wrong on so many levels and secondly duh I'm not a male so I don't care about this sale.  So of course I immediately unsubscribed. Maybe just maybe if the blast was more relevant I wouldn't have unsubscribed, like if it was a shoe sale because by golly I do love my shoes, but it wasn't and I need more spam like I need a hole in my head.

What's the Moral?

Moral of the story know your customer or you've lost the war before the battle has even began. Have you noticed an increase in spam in your inbox? How do you deal with this unsolicited mail?

As you would expect we at the PixlD Offices celebrated in style at the 'plush beachside' Waterside Restaurant in Barbados (a.k.a Paradise). If you are meeting PixlD for the first time or just want a recap, here goes; PixlD Inc is a Boutique New Media Outfit based in sunny Barbados (yeay!), which specializes in Web Design and Development, Social Media Marketing, Social and Mobile App development and Overall Awesomeness. We have, until now, used the power of socialmedia and word of mouth, like many smaller businesses to get our name out there. We, however, strongly believe that an integrated marketing/communications plan is key; this is at the core of working with our clients. In following suit,  we've made the move ourselves to present our company, both to our local market and the world : )

4 Facebook Features To Improve Your Experience
Let’s be honest, most of us only login to Facebook  to check what our friends are up to. We  rarely check our account or security settings on a regular basis and changes or updates can go unnoticed for a record period of time. Today let’s highlight four interesting features, some newer than others, which might have slipped unnoticed through the cracks.

1)     Account Security

One of the most notable features is the increased account security via https login. Laptops and other devices allow us to be more mobile, venturing out to cafes with Wi-Fi access. Secured Browsing is advantageous in these instances where login occurs on an open/public network as it can prevent unauthorized access to your private account information.  To make the required changes to your settings go to Account-> Account Settings-> Account Security. There is also the option to set up approved devices which can access your Facebook account. In the event that an unauthorized device tries to access your account you will receive notification and can choose to ‘end the activity’. Account Activity provides all account login details, including login time, location and Device type for your review.

2)     Linked Accounts

Now you can automatically be logged into Facebook once you are logged into one of your Linked accounts. Choose the account which you wish to link (Step 1), Click Link new Account (Step 2), the pop-out box (Step 3) will ask for your Facebook password and once confirmed you are on your way.

3)     Comments Upgrade

With the comment upgrade Facebook allows the user to comment as either a profile or a page, comments are published to the Facebook Wall and in friends/ fans newsfeeds. I could give you all the details but Mari Smith has written quite an extensive post on the Comment Upgrades. Will you be adding this feature to your website or blog?

4)     Download Your Information

Facebook allows you to download all of your content. Authentication of your identity is required before completing the download process. An email is forwarded to your registered email address and you are required to re-enter your password and in certain circumstances may also have to solve a friend photo captcha or an SMS captcha. It must be noted that one cannot choose what is and isn’t downloaded, it’s all or nothing. I'm not very excited about this feature as I’m sure most of us would have our photos saved elsewhere and who really wants to back up information like your friends’ lists, wall posts and comments. I say nope. Have you tried any of these features or are they going unnoticed in your settings and gathering cobwebs.

So What ‘Exactly’ Is Your Klout Score?

Klout is the measurement of your overall online influence and ranges from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 100.  Klout bases your score on the ability to drive action such as clicks, comments, tweets, replies etc. within your community. Greater interaction equates to greater influence and hence a higher Klout score.

How Does It Work?

Klout is based on three pillars: 1) True Reach which measures the number of persons listening to you 2) Amplification which is the likelihood that your content will be acted upon, whether  tweeted, commented, liked and 3) Network Influence  focuses on the  Klout scores of your engaged audience. How significant is that persons retweeting you.

Twitter and Klout: A Distraction?

On reading about the integration of Klout in the Twitter timeline I of course jumped and added the extension and was amazed at how I was able to assess everyone in my timeline in a glance. Or could I?  My first observation was that having Klout scores so easily accessible can be pretty overwhelming as one can get caught up in the numbers whizzing by as opposed to what is being shared. Take note that this may be attributed to the fact that I am easily distracted and therefore may not affect the majority of you whom I am sure are more focused. Then I found myself wondering about those persons who had no Klout score at all. Why is that? Hadn’t they been evaluated by Klout? Does that mean that they have lower than a Klout Score of 1?  Oh the questions, my mind was working overtime.

True Determinant of Quality?

With the integration of Klout in our timeline will this now become the defining determinant of  whom we add to our communities. Does a lower Klout score mean that persons will be automatically disqualified? I know most of you will be saying of course not but an even larger portion of you are aware from experience  that in Twitterville we are sometimes blinded by the bright lights and the numbers; bigger twitter followings, loads of lists, and so why would high Klout scores be any different. Most notable was the  individuals using Twitter as their public phone booth @replying each other Ad nauseam. Don’t get me wrong, conversation is awesome after all it’s about being social but there needs to be limits. In addition to the continuous @replying, some were also guilty of  posting some rather banal tweets yet Klout assigns these accounts relatively high scores I presume, due to the level of chatter which I’m sure is there MO on other networks. While others actually disseminating useful content but less concerned with the interaction seemed to be penalized.

Klout Needs Work

As was highlighted on Pushing Social measurement is part in parcel of accountability and therefore measurement tools do have considerable merit and  cannot be ignored if we wish to strive for success. However,  it is important that we understand the limitations of these systems and do not blindly embrace their use. Klout’s algorithm can be seen as a work in progress and may incorrectly assess a person’s influence or value but there is still value to the tool. Having a Klout score available in your twitter timeline can be distracting however  it should not be substituted  in place of due diligence, take some time to get to know both the potential and the current members of  your  network. The Art of Social Listening: 7 Tools To Improve This Task
An integral part of any social media effort is listening. Whether you are in the process of preparing a social media strategy or your campaign is up and running, it is essential to know what your audience is saying. Why you may ask? Well there are a number of reasons but I daresay the most important is that any successful social media campaign must be based on fulfilling the need(s) of its customers. Social Listening not only allows the listener to collect information about their audience and acquire an understanding of their wants and needs, but it can also be used to find out what is being said about the Brand and its competition. Let’s take a quick look at  7 Social Media listening tools small businesses can use to  track their mentions across the web:

1.SocialMention

This social media search and analysis platform was first brought to my attention by my Twitter pal @Ileane of Basic Blog Tips. Social Mention allows you to drill down to a specific social tool in a list of more than 80 sources. It provides metrics around sentiment, reach, keywords and lists top users and the top sources of your Brand mentions .

2.Addictomatic

Addict-o- matic provides search results in a fun, interactive manner with videos and images. Simply choose your search term, brand, name or keyword and hit create. The results dashboard can be arranged in order of preference, bookmarked and checked as  required.

3.Twitter Search

The most notable feature of  Twitter Search is the ability to search by location. An extremely useful function for  local businesses, which can perform more targeted queries by limiting their search to an audience within their radius.

4.Google Alerts

Google Alerts provides a simple interface, which is easy to set-up and allows you to receive inbox alerts as frequently as desired. Through the preview feature you can tweak search terms for better results.

5.WorkStreamer

None of us can deny that it is good business practice to monitor one's competition and this is where Workstreamer proves to be very useful. Unlike other listening tools this search is done by company name as opposed to keyword.You can monitor your vendors, partners and even yourself. Note however that it might be difficult to access data if the company is too small or not very active online.

6.LinkedIn Signal

LinkedIn Signal is a new search feature being offered by LinkedIn. Limit or broaden  search parameters such as timeline, location and degree of connection based on your objectives.  It also allows one to save the search and check for updates at a later date.

7. Trackur

Despite being limited to a one keyword search, Trackur Free is a tool that should be added to your arsenal. Due to the aforementioned limitation, it would probably be best used in conjunction with another monitoring tool. Trackur Free illustrates mentions over time, and you are provided with visual results of changes in buzz and sentiment. The tools I have mentioned above are all free. Social Media for Small Business – 4 Major Concerns Addressed
' Intro to Social Media 101: What Every Businessperson Ought to Know' was a seminar, which I recently hosted in conjunction with the Barbados Small Business Association.  During this, although the necessity to integrate social media into their marketing strategy was recognized, four main concerns were raised about its implementation within real life business scenarios. This post addresses those four concerns by outlining useful resources to introduce and guide small businesses as they take the leap into social media, hopefully making this process as painless as possible.

1. Not Enough Time in a Day

One of the most if not the most popular reason for being late to the social media game is the excuse that there simply isn’t enough time. In a small business you may feel overwhelmed at having to master another field and  decide there just isn’t enough hours in a day. Don’t worry you won't need 25 hours in a day or an 8 day work week to prosper, but trust me when I say 'You Must Make Time For Social Media'. 2. Where’s the Pen and Paper?

Dropbox: Software to sync your files online and across your computers
I had a meeting last week, at which i intended to show off proposed website designs to a client. I'd just pulled off an all-nighter to have them completed and before taking a little nap, saved the images onto a flash drive, from my working desktop, so that they'll be on hand to access during the meeting. Pretty standard, right? Only thing is, a few hours and change of location later, I realize that the flash drive is still at home, sitting comfortably in the back pocket of a pair of denims I decided to ditch at the last minute, classic scenario! Thankfully, I use Dropbox, hence, was able to retrieve the images from an online back up and the meeting was a breeze. "...And now to the focus of this post":

 

What is Dropbox

As much as i'm tempted to, I do not want to wrongly assume that everyone knows what it is so, here goes: Dropbox offers a cool service that lets you store and sync files online, so that they’re accessible from multiple computers.

 

 

Getting Started

An account is required so simply visit the website and, if I have not  already convinced you enough, watch the welcome 750k hits per month video on the homepage, which definitely will. It's a pretty standard sign up process.

 

 

The getting started procedure is nicely illustrated and is quite simple to follow: Install it on your computers and mobile devices, drop in files and folders, and watch them sync. All your files then become accessible on each machine.

 

 

Packages and Pricing

After sign up, there are several price packages to choose from. The first plan is Free and offers 2 GB of space. This plan can be expanded via referrals, so do this diligently and you can earn up to an extra 3 GB of space, which is a total of 5 GB free space. Following that, you can choose from 2 levels of paid plans: A Pro 50 plan offering 50 GB of storage at $9.99/month and a Pro 100 plan offering 100 GB at $19.99/month.

 

 

My advice is to start off with the free option, which in most cases is more than enough to back up your work files. You can then work your way up as required.

 

Application Features

 

 

Feature list includes the following: File Syncing
  • On saving a file, it is instantly and automatically synced to all your other computers and and mobile devices, giving you the freedom to work anywhere and always have the most updated versions of files you need.
File Sharing
  • File, entire folder or photo album sharing is easy. Simply put whatever you want to share in your 'Dropbox' and invite people to them. This works very well as a collaborative tool on Team projects.
Online Backup
  • Any file you put into your 'Dropbox' folder is automatically backed up to remote servers, hence my images were safely synced to the cloud and I was able to access, make edits and save changes across all my other machines.
Undo + Undelete
  • A 30-day history of every change you make is kept, so you can undo any mistakes and even undelete files.

 

It should be said that, although Dropbox does a wonderful job at backing up and syncing your data allowing recovery from lose or damage, it may not suffice as your only backup/storage option, especially as most of us will be inclined to opt for the free package. 5GB of storage just won't cut it. I suggest that, while dropbox is good for regular backup of 'work files', more conventional options, including the use of Time Machine for Mac and numerous others for PCs, should be explored for longer term storage of all your personal files, music and video content.

 

Mobile Access

 

 

Dropbox also provides free applications for iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and Android which lets you:
  • Access your 'Dropbox' on the go
  • Download files for offline viewing
  • take and upload photos and videos and sync them to your Dropbox.
  • Share links to files in your 'Dropbox'.
  • Export your files to other applications.
  • Sync downloaded files so they're up-to-date.

 

Web Access

Although you can work with your files locally on your desktops and mobile devices, Dropbox has a web interface, powered by a 'millitary-grade' secure application, from which you can access all of it's features.

 

In Conclusion

Dropbox is by far the simplest, most stable and robust online sync tools out there. The website is easy to use and product information cannot get any clearer. It is a piece of software that is always assured a place on all of my desktop and mobile devices and will definitely be beneficial if incorporated into your own workflow, both at home and work. After a couple of months the enormity of the task becomes too much to bear, no subscribers, no unique visitors and you quickly become disillusioned. In creeps a case of acute ‘blogngitis’; for those of you have been fortunate never to be diagnosed with the ailment it is blogging laryngitis, one literally loses their blogging voice. Your blog sits catching dust and cobwebs while you rationalize your inactivity by assuring yourself that you are attending to matters of more strategic concern. Before you decide that those hosting and domain renewal fees could be put to much  better use, than prolonging your blogging angst, consider these 7 simple and proven tips to reinvigorate your blog and make it ROCK in 2011. 1. Explore A New Look Go ahead spruce up your home base. You are probably tired of looking at that blog design you’ve had for a tad bit too long. The font and functionality is outdated and you have to admit that it could be loads more user friendly. Take a look at your blog critically, is it outdated? Is it difficult to navigate? Hmmm maybe it is time for a redesign. Hire a designer if this doesn’t fall into your realm of expertise or if you have the know-how go ahead and rock that D.I.Y.  It’s just like throwing a party; when you are having friends over don’t you always tidy-up? Go On Make New Friends Have you fallen off that well-trodden track of blog networking?  Have you stopped guest posting, commenting and being active in blog communities.  Blogging provides the opportunity to network with persons from all over the world, in different niches, with various personalities, abilities and outlooks on life. The insight which they can bring to your network is phenomenal. Go ahead and go buck wild in the areas of guest posting and commenting. Tackle big, medium and small blogs, blogs in your niche and those which are as far as possible off your topic, after all variety is the spice of life so don’t limit yourself. A combination of being seen and contributing to both popular and mid-size blogs will do wonders for your profile.Be sure to network, form alliances and friendships with others who wish to achieve similar goals as yourself.  There are numerous blogging communities such as Blogfrog, Blogengage to name a couple. 3. Have a Quality Message What is the objective of your blog? Whether you are chatting about social media, travel, shopping  or the Apollo Butterfly quality content is key. Your blog post doesn’t have to be 2000 words long , but if it is more power to you; just be sure to add value to the conversation. I have loads of respect for those who can write daily blog posts and I have no less respect for those who can’t. If you can’t post daily no need for an anxiety attack, decide instead to post to your blog regularly and to a schedule. It can be once a week or twice a week on particular days, it’s like that standing date you have recurring in your 'crackberry', get in the routine and stick to it. 5. Look For Inspiration, It's all around Who remembers the film “Love Actually” with Billy Mack repeatedly singing that phrase ‘Love/Christmas is all around us and so the feeling grows’ so is inspiration. Whether you are in the bar or the nightclub, at the movies or reading/watching the daily news or during your daily interaction with your fellow man/woman, at work or on holiday. There is always fodder for a blog article, we all need to simply be more vigilant, dot the I-s and cross our t-s and lock that stuff down. 6. Following the viral blue print Read the article "The Viral Marketing Blueprint"a couple of months ago and thought it was filled with loads of great information.  Yes we may perform one or two of these tasks but how many of us ensure that we do each of these tasks for every single post. I bookmarked the article  for future use and I would say the future is now. It's quite detailed so go ahead and digest. 7. It’s Got to be YOU Afterall Just Be You…Embrace your personality fully in 2011. Your quirky nature, the way you say things differently, your humor or lack thereof and let it all be reflected in your writing style. Though the new profile displays got the majority of the reviews by users, one of the little noticed and mentioned features was a new Find-Friends Browser. Currently being described by bloggers as a way to ‘reconnect with old school friends’ or for ‘discovering real life friends’ and it’s a good update to make life easier finding others with similar interest in your extended social circle. My first experience with the new Find-Friend Browser was after confirming a friend request under the new Facebook layout. The pop-up option “You may also know some of his friends. See More” came up and naturally, curious about friends in our social circle I clicked the option to “See More”. That was when I got my first experience with the Facebook Find-Friends Browser. My initial reaction was ”Damn FB has way too much of peoples’ info in their servers”. This was primarily because the new feature allows you the option to better sift through potential friends in your extended circle based on a whole collection of criteria. It provides an expanded, more in-depth friend search functionality. Because you have a number of parameters you can filter searches by, you can also customize your search settings to suit your preferred friend search preferences. From practical use the feature is better than anything they had before and it does allow for better search for other people with similar social characteristics. However, it feels a bit like social stalking. The new browser along with the new profile layout makes it much easier for profile “stalking” which may not necessarily be a bad thing despite all of the negative connotations associated with the word “stalking”. The reality is that you are now better able to find work colleagues, former schoolmates or others that live in your same areas and hometown. On the flipside though, some people think this feature is a bit creepy because of the ease with which you can explore other users’ data by the pre-set characteristics. From my experience actually using it I can definitely agree and see why that would be the case. It has also reiterated my commitment to keep certain key profile characteristics blank. Increasingly in a world of little to no privacy am I not entitled at least to make it harder for some aspects of my information not to be so easily found? Looking forward to your comments on that one and about the new Facebook Find-Friends Browser. Whether you love it or think it’s just plain ‘too much info’ (TMI), we’ll follow up with another detailed post coming soon speaking to your concerns.

Huh, i’m confused already? The name is a bit confusing as both types of ‘shared user space’ on Facebook are called Facebook Groups but the redesigned Facebook Groups (the new one) has some added functionality. It allows Facebook members to now selectively share information with a small group of friends. Essentially it is a shared space that allows you to exchange information with a smaller subset of people. The group chat feature as a subset of the new Groups allows members to participate in back-and-forth IM conversations with everyone in the group at the same time. With the new Facebook Groups you can chat with Facebook members that are not on your friends list but who are in the group. Which is a great feature especially if the Facebook Group has been setup to be used by colleagues for example Another advantage or disadvantage; depending on how you look at it; is that the group chat feature allows you to chat with everyone in the group simultaneously. This may prove to be a disadvantage in future especially for larger groups. With all of the above now said go forth and try out the new group chat feature and I’m looking forward to reading your comments on both that, and the new Facebook Groups design.

Interestingly enough it was reported today that Skype and Facebook may partner, full details at Mashable ‘Messages’, is an internal equivalent to a traditional email service, albeit in the walled garden of Facebook. I stop short at calling it a full email service as it’s not, but it does provide some measure of electronic exchange in a format not dissimilar to many email services. I find it inferior to most email services with the problem once again being functionality, as FB Messages doesn’t allow you currently to do a hell of a lot. So what does Facebook do right? The list can become quite extensive as to what Facebook doesn’t do well and about it’s many shortcomings. But the giant keeps lumbering on and at well over half a billion users and worth billions, I somehow don’t think that its flaws to date have hindered it much. So what does Facebook do right? 1. It’s the Full Package Facebook like most things is not the sum of its parts, but rather how well it brings together a whole host of services under one platform. Other providers and software may do individual features better, but no other entity brings these together in a social way like only Facebook does. 2. It Does Social Facebook has managed to create a whole ‘ecosystem of social’, by combining in the virtual world, what you and your friends like to do offline. As a tool the FB service intuitively serves as an expansion of social and communicative behaviour. From sharing ideas, activities, events and interests, Facebook is partially an expression and extension of the individual’s character, allowing you to do some aspects of your social life better. 3. Accessibility By keeping its structure open enough; it leverages the ability of its various publics. From app developers, whose’s major task is creating new tools to organize the connectivity and large user base of the social network. To businesses; small and large; who have finally after acknowledging the transformative power of the start-up giant, embraced it as a new tool to do everything from marketing, direct PR, customer care and tech support, to market research and analytics. Regular users; the ‘bread and butter’ of FB and the glue that holds it all together; they are the markets of the app developers and businesses, and their social activity is what powers Facebook. All of these different groups have found their niche on the Facebook network, as the social newtorking platform has made it easy to access, connect, share and exchange. 4. Other People's Content Facebook has tapped into one of the largest phenomenon known to man, something that most of the other large successful web start-ups are rushing aggressively to master. Facebook has managed to tap into and leverage quite expertly, the power of one of social media start-ups’ greatest forces, i.e. the creative power of Other People’s Content (OPC). This ensures that Facebook can remain seemly constant as a platform, but have content as dynamic as each individual users collection of ‘friends’ and groups. The successful thing about the autonomous business model FB operates under is that its members serve the roles as being both suppliers and consumers of content.

Remember the Milk
We've all heard/said it: "Time is our most valuable commodity", "Time is Money" etc. Guess what..., We're correct. Procrastination costs us time and money, leaves us stressed, exhausted and unreliable, whereas productivity pays (literally). In attempts to get back on track, we've used “To Do” lists of some sort, ranging from traditional 'Post-it' notes to the more recently launched on- and offline 'to-do' list products, which feature task sharing and other features. Enter Remember the Milk. It was created so that you no longer have to write your "To Do" lists on stickies, random scraps of paper, or even the back of your hand (I know, I used to do that). Remember The Milk is a task- and time-management web application which allows users to create multiple task lists. Added tasks can be edited to include (or not) various meta fields such as locations and an integrated Google Maps feature allows users to save commonly-used locations. Tasks can also be organized by tags or can be postponed, and Remember the Milk will inform users of the number of times that that task has been postponed.

Shortcuts
  • To add a task, just type t on your keyboard and start typing.
  • Type y if you have a lot of text and want to add a note to your task.
  • After you have saved the note, you can type d to set a due date and f to create a recurring task.
  • Once you have completed a task, just click on it and use the shortcut c to mark it completed.

Notifications It is impossible to forget your important to-do items with RTM. You will receive notification of upcoming tasks via Jabber, GTalk, AIM, ICQ, GaduGadu, MSN, Yahoo IM, Skype, email or even SMS.

 

 

 

Integration With Existing Apps RTM includes an Atom and iCal feed for each of your to-do lists and for all lists together. The iCal feeds work with all the usual clients, including iCal.app and Sunbird. You can now also see your tasks on your Google homepage, or event-manage them with Google Calendar.or can add single tasks or import whole lists via email.

Friends tagging you in unflattering photos. Are these really your friends? 10. Not having the dsilike button on Facebook. 11. Having the dislike button but knowing I'll never use it because 'my friends' may be offended. I'm human after all , can't live with... can't live without 12. Fanpages that don’t allow fan comments by default. 13. Forums which insist that you must add their logo before you can participate /get an invite / use them. There are a number of challenges every business that is new to social media marketing may face, as they attempt to navigate these choppy social media waters with the goal of mastering its tools. I have highlighted some of the most essential ones below. 1. Failing to Own your  Online Domain Yes we’ve jumped in feet first. Setting up our profiles in Twitter, Facebook, Linked In and quite a few other communities, we proceed full speed ahead amassing friends and followers with the belief  that these social networks are the cornerstone of our online presence.  We’ve just made our first mistake by failing to realize the importance of having a domain home, whether it is a blog or website. It is fundamental to  be able to direct potential customers to an online home where they can connect with you and learn a little more about your service or product. Furthermore a  third party site leaves your company  at the mercy of the powers that be. As the third party provider can suspend or cancel your account without warning for suspected or perceived abuse of their ‘Terms of Service’, thus rendering months or years of hard work useless. Such was the case last week when a page with 47000+ fans was disabled because Facebook believed that it was in violation of their terms of service. This matter has since been resolved and you can read the details here. Yes we should have outposts in these networks because this is where our potential customers socialize, but always ensure that your branded website or blog remain the cornerstone of your business...always directing your customers back to your Company’s online home. 2. Not Differentiating between Quality and Quantity You’ve joined Twitter and you’re unsure of the following etiquette; should you automatically follow everyone who follows you? After all you see other colleagues in your field with hundreds of thousands of followers, obviously they must be pretty influential and that’s your objective as well. Quantity is not always synonymous with quality. I think we can all agree that it’s better business to have 500 fans or followers who are interested in your product or service, engage with you and therefore more likely to become customers than 10, 000 fans or followers who never read your tweets or status updates and never have any intention of using your service. Always remember ‘Quality Trumps Quantity’. 3. Using too many Tools As with anything there is a learning curve for social media and its tools. Attempting to use too many tools when one is new can result in confusion and poor performance. Feeling overwhelmed and not experiencing  the returns expected can  subsequently result in disillusionment and abandonment of the systems. Decide on which tools are most important to your business, then master or at least become extremely comfortable with them before proceeding. It would be more rewarding to take on a lighter load instead of overwhelming yourself in the early stages. 4. No Privacy in the World Wide Web We’ve all heard the horror stories of someone who has said or done something on Facebook, which they should not have, and got caught. Maybe you even have a friend whose status updates make you shake your head in wonder at their audacity...I know I do. We must all be cognisant of  the fact that there is no such thing as privacy when it comes to the world wide web. Therefore be careful of the content you post whether it be status updates, photos or blog posts and further more be aware of the fact that the web is viral in nature and nothing spreads faster than the piece of news  you wish you had never said or did. My advice never post anything which you are uncomfortable with the whole world seeing. 5. Too Much Self-Promotion I’m sure you have seen that person in your twitter feed who posts 20 links daily directing traffic to his product or service, or that brand on Facebook which uses their page as a medium to only pull in their blog posts. All of the conversation is one-way. Would you want to be  friends with someone who talks only about him/herself 24hours a day 365 days a year? After a while it will become unbelievably boring and dare I say annoying. Its the same with social networking sites and invariably  people will stop following you if all you do is try to sell them your product or service. 6. Failing to Manage your Expectations Thinking that Social Media will be the panacea for all your business issues? Yep, we’ll set up a couple of social media outposts and Bam!! the dollars will start flowing in, you might be thinking. As with all business efforts not only does it takes time but also quite a bit of effort to make an impact. Be mindful that you need to be consistent and in it for the long haul. 7. Automation and More Automation Of course automation has its place but like anything, too much is never a good thing. Persons may use tools to update status in multiple networks not taking into consideration that each community is different and requires that your messaging reflects this. The content and frequency of messages will differ across platforms hence automation may not always be the solution. Have you been guilty of any of the above? Now we all know Google is in the habit of changing its logo (on their homepage) to commemorate special occasions and the world cup was always going to get Google-love, twist is, it is being done differently. If you search for “World Cup” in Google, you’ll listings of upcoming World Cup games and other search results, as usual, Now scroll to the bottom and, you'll see that the other Google logo, above the search result page numbers, has changed to Goooooooal!

Working in the field of design, marketing, advertising, etc, we are constantly pressured to creatively or technically out-perform ourselves and having useful tools can help a great deal. In these series of posts, i intend to highlight useful tools that help streamline work processes and save time.

 

There is the constant need to send images and designs back and forth to clients or peers for feedback, many times however, the people who are sent these images neither have the knowledge nor software to annotate on the images. Result usually is feedback in the form of lengthy word document which is separate to the actual image and the subsequent toggle between image viewer and word processor windows...

They are, instead, social media tools, which like numerous other social media tools, can assist your company or brand achieve social media success, if utilized correctly. So what is social media marketing? What is Social Media Marketing According to Wikipedia Social media marketing usually centers around efforts to create content that attracts attention, generates online conversations, and encourages readers to share it within their social networks. The message spreads between users and resonates because it is coming from a trusted source, as opposed to the company or brand. Through social media marketing, organizations increase their brand awareness and facilitate conversations with the customer. Social media marketing is therefore, basically an effort to humanize a company or brand by encouraging customers and prospective customers to engage, thus driving loyalty and preference. Social Media. The Why? An important reason to integrate social media into your marketing plan is the continuous growth experienced by social network platforms. Facebook announced 400 million registered users in February 2010, Twitter confirmed 105 million users on its network in April 2010 with an addition of 300,000 new users per day and there were over 2.5 million YouTube videos embedded into blogs between July and December 2009. Facebook, Youtube and Twitter were ranked 2nd, 3rd and 11th, respectively on Alexa in April 2010. It is only logical, therefore, to ensure that your company or brand has an outpost in these huge networks where your business’ target audience socializes. It is also rapidly becoming the norm for consumers to take their purchasing process online and if your business or brand is not present where the consumer is, you stand to lose out. Social Media Plan. The How? Essential steps are required in order to achieve a successful social media plan. Some of these are outlined. 1. Listen: Social media networks are the tools which facilitate conversation. Listen, as it is essential to determine what is being discussed and how you can contribute before launching your company or brand into the social media world. 2. Brand Position: Consumers are becoming less interested in what your company does (the features) and more concerned with your brand's ethos. 3. Determine overall Objective: Clarify what your objective is and outline a social media plan to fit; whether is brand awareness, brand loyalty,to boost sales or a combination of the above. 4. Set Trackable Goals: Define specific goals which are measurable in order that they provide a benchmark against which to evaluate performance. 5. Develop a Content Strategy: Plan, Research and Outline any content you may have or intend to create in order to attract and engage your target. 6. Choose your Tools: Facebook and Twitter may be obvious choices, but be sure to explore how else you can maximize your social media bang. 7. Implement and Engage: Join the conversation, assist wherever possible, participate and be a genuine member of the community. “Be social not Do social” or your community will eventually note the insincerity. 8. Monitor and Evaluate: Put systems in place to monitor and evaluate performance and progress. This is neccessary to ensure that you stay on track in order to achieve your objectives. A Total Social Media Strategy The decision to undertake a social media strategy need not be an overwhelming one, after all social media/networking is currently the biggest thing around. Ensure that your social media strategy is aligned with your business and communications strategy and be sure to avoid some of these common mistakes made. Take some time do initial research and put together a social media plan because you are lost without one; imagine trying to reach your destination with neither a map nor knowledge of your route - lost. Be patient. Remember the race is not for the swift, it can be a pretty lengthy process, actually, due to the relationship building process. Relationships/friendships fostered over a period are more likely to last and although you might make a couple of fast friends, the faster they arrive the faster they (usually) leave. Used effectively, social media networking provides an abundance of opportunity for career advancement, not only to internet and social-media professionals as was previously the case, but to professionals in all areas of expertise. Over the past few years, and with the explosion of social networking, social media networking good practices, have evolved to ensure that you make the most of this process. Some of which are highlighted in this post. 1. Be professional: No matter the network, the objective for setting up your profile must always be kept in mind. Be extremely cognizant of status updates, photos used and videos posted. Think before you post; if you are ever in doubt then don’t post it. Also be attentive to your friends/followers/fans and their ability to tarnish your image through unsuitable wall posts and photo tags. The solution to such issues could be the adjustment of your wall and/or privacy settings accordingly or in extreme cases, unfriending or blocking persons who may not be in a similar mind state as yourself. 2. Fill in/Clean up your profile: Ensure that your Bios, whether it be Facebook, Linkedin or other social network are filled out completely.Try to be as specific as you can so recruiters know exactly what you are interested in. Highlight your passions, likes and interests as this provides a more holistic picture and gives recruiters a better idea of whether you are a suitable fit for the position in question, don't be afraid to show a little personality and think outside the box. The use of key words/information in your profile makes it easier to be found. 3. Be on as many Networks as possible: Don’t concentrate all your efforts on just one network as this could limit opportunities. Networks such as LinkedIn,which is the largest professional network would be fundamental to making business connections and is definitely key in the search process. Do not, however, discount the usefulness and ability to make worthwhile connections on Facebook, Twitter , Myspace, Tagged and Plaxo and other niche networks. 4. Connect wisely: Yes you’ve cleaned up your profile ensured that it appears professional, gone out and set up profiles in various networks. Next, do your research and be sure to connect with the right people, industry leaders and innovators. When connecting be sure to introduce yourself and explain your desire to connect with them. It doesn’t end there because a connection without forming a relationship is pretty useless. Be sure to engage in dialog and build a relationship with that individual. Approach wisely as these individuals will be receiving numerous messages, emails and requests. 5. Research, Research, Research: Social networks can be used to research members of management teams, thus gaining insight into their personalities and likes as well as company philosophies. This provides an edge during the interview process. 6. Market yourself by writing: Blog posts not only help build authority and gives one professional credibility while advertising your expertise but it also demonstrates a deeper degree of interest in the field which may not be evident by simply alluding to it in a social profile. If you are new to writing and trying to get your feet wet in the blogging world, research interesting blogs in your industry and offer to guest blog. Spread your wings and house your own blog when you are more confident as a writer and have the time to do so, as maintaining a full-time blog is usually a time consuming undertaking. Be sure to keep your contacts informed when you publish articles by emailing publication links to your contact lists. Utilizing social networks in the quest for career advancement can appear to be a risky route. Once careful thought is put into the process it can yield benefits. 5 Font Replacement Techniques to Embed Custom Fonts
Typography is very important in Web Design. Current Web Design trends suggest the use of 'fancy' fonts to ensure a good user experience, however, most of these 'fancy' fonts are not standard system fonts.
Font Replacement techniques provide a good solution to allow the use of your 'custom' fonts on websites. This post outlines some of the most popular Font Replacement solutions that can be used to incorporate your 'custom' fonts into your next website; to make it 'pop'.

 

sIFR sIFR (Scalable Inman Flash Replacement) uses flash and javascript to generate the text in the custom font. A web safe font is used if a user doesn’t have flash installed. Styling is handled by both CSS and JavaScript. Advantages • Text is selectable • Any font can be used. Cufón Cufón is a Javascript-based font replacement solution which makes use of canvas and VML. It converts your font to a proprietary JavaScript format and link to it and the main Cufón script. Styling is handled by CSS as normal. Typeface.js Typeface.js uses the HTML5 canvaselement or VML to draw text. It is quite similar to Cufón in that your font is converted into a proprietary JavaScript format and link to it and the main typeface.js JavaScript library. It is styled normally via CSS. FLIR Face lift image replacement (FLIR) uses PHP and javascript to generate an image that replaces the desired text. PIR PHP Image Replacement uses PHP and jQuery to dynamically generate images for your text. It  basically requires you to upload a standard font file to your web server, which is used along with your CSS to display your font accordingly. How to build your own Twitter Background using Adobe Fireworks
Twitter has become one of the hottest sites to be seen on, everyone is on it. It is increasingly being used as a real-time direct marketing and expression tool, whether you are, Life training coach, Designer, an Artist, a Musician or a Blogger. Wouldn't it be nice to STAND OUT? This post outlines how to build your own Twitter background using Adobe Fireworks. If you're ready to design, lets commence.... HINT: You can browse through popular Twitter users’ profiles for inspiration. However be careful about copying designs and photographs and other resources as they may be copyrighted. PREPARATION: Plan your background design (sketch if you have to) before you begin. I intend to design an extended layout to display 'Additional information' in the sidebar (left of the background). I am thinking; "Twittersphere" comprising, clouds, flying planes, various twitter birds and very brief 'additional information' (My name, and what i do) LETS DESIGN (TUTORIAL): 1. Create a blank canvas with dimensions 1280x768

 

2. Choose your canvas background. I have chosen a light grey with the use of the 'color-picker' tool

 

3. Using the 'rectangle tool', and 'guides', draw your rectangular 'active twitter content' (timeline, sideline and menu) as show below.

 

4. Google image search, download, open and paste the twitter logo into place as shown below.

 

5. Holding down the shift button, click all 3 shapes and the twitter logo to select them all, then 'Right-Click' and select 'Group' to group all objects together.

 

6. With the 'grouped' item selected, select your 'Align' tool from the 'Window' drop down menu if it is not already open, make sure the 'Position' is activated and Click the 'Align horizontal center' to align the 'Grouped Object' to the stage

 

NOTE: Colors of both the timeline and menu boxes are non-editable and will stay white but the color of the sidebar should be chosen to compliment your overall background design. 7. 'Lock' and 'Hide' the grouped 'active twitter content' layer to avoid accidental edit as you proceed to design your background 8. Proceed to layout your background design, ensuring that the 'Additional information' fits within the Background area to the left of the 'active twitter content'. 9. I achieve the 'Twittersphere' background by 'Copying', Pasting, Re-sizing and altering Opacities and Contrast levels of my graphic elements. I make use of the 'Chamfer', 'Rectangular', 'Pen', 'Text' tools (a combination different fonts) and my 'Avatar Graphic' to achieve the 'Additional information' section.

 

NOTE: Your design is entirely up to you - knock yourself out. Remember, however, to tweak your design to display properly at the major screen resolutions. You can test you design in your web browser using the 'Preview in Browser' button under the 'File' drop-down menu. If you are previewing in the 'Google Chrome' browser, the 'Resoultion Test' extension can be used to preview your design at different browser sizes. 10. Select all your 'Background (Twittersphere)' elements and again 'Right-Click' and select 'Group' to group all objects together.

 

11. 'Re-arrange' your layers by dragging the grouped 'Background' layer underneath the 'active twitter content' layer. Un-hide the 'active twitter content' to show it's content and there you go.

 

It's complete - admire your new background.

 

12. Re-hide your 'active twitter content' layer as you prepare to 'Optimize' and 'Export' your new background. 13. To Optimize, 'Right-Click' and 'Insert Rectangular Slice', 'Edit' the 'Width' to 1280px and height to the shortest which includes all your active design (vertically). Remember to keep the file size as low as possible.

 

14. Open the 'Optimize' panel from the 'Window' drop down menu if it is not already open and choose JPEG - Better Quality, Quality - 80% as shown below.

 

15. 'Right-Click' and 'Export Selected Slice'. 'Save' and proceed to load your New Twitter Background design to your profile.

 

NOTE: Although a canvas width of 1280px was used in this tutorial, I have tweaked my final design to a width of 1920px so that my design spans the entire width of a 1920px resolution monitor

 

 

HOW TO SET UP: Setup you new Twitter background on your Twitter page.
  1. Click Settings -> Design -> Change background image.
  2. If you do not intend to tile your background image, uncheck the 'Tile background' radio button. Click Save changes.

  3. To set up other colors used in your profile (Text, Name, Link, Sidebar fill and Sidebar border) click Change design colors.

 

Finito!,... You have a distinctive Twitter Background, Now go conquer the (Twitter) World : ).

Google Buzz for Mobile: Features
Following the release of Google Buzz, Google announced an optimized interface for using and connecting with mobile phones; Google Buzz for mobile. The following post outlines Google Buzz for mobile's updated feature set: 1. It is currently available for BlackBerry, Android and iPhone and can be accessed from buzz.google.com from your phone's browser.

 

2. Gives the user a mobile-friendly version of Buzz, allowing you to view and create buzz messages.

 

 

3. The 'Following' view shows buzz from the people you follow, just like Google Buzz in your Gmail.

 

4. 'Nearby' view shows public buzz that has been tagged with a location near you, and might be from people you don't follow.

 

5. From Nearby view, you can also select a specific place from the list of nearby places and view posts attached to that place. 6. Location additions to your buzz posts focuses on places, not just lat/long location or addresses. (which makes location information more useful both to your followers). You can easily exclude your location if you want to post without it. 7. You also control whether your buzz posts will be public or private - by default or for individual posts. While anyone can access your public posts, private posts are viewable only by the people you choose to share them with. 8. Google Buzz has Google map integration, which uses GPS to detect your current location. The new Buzz layer allows you to see buzz near you or anywhere on the map. You can post public buzz directly from the layer, and even attach a photo from your phone. You can access, read recent comments, or post buzz about Places by tapping on the place name in any location-tagged post.

FB Lite is a streamlined, faster-loading version of the social network we're all on. <whisper>Get yourself an account if you already do not have one</whisper> According to Facebook, it has nothing to do with Twitter or FriendFeed but was designed to be used in parts of the world where broadband speeds vary and can be expensive, as was shown in its initial testing taking place in India. GETTING AROUND FACEBOOK LITE: Let's take a quick tour of 'The Lite One' For starters, Facebook Lite can be accessed by visiting www.lite.facebook.com or by, www.lite.facebook.com/settings/defaultsite, to set as your default site If you check the box to allow switch between the Lite and full-fledged site, there's always a link in the upper-right corner. Although Facebook Lite has nothing to do with Twitter or FriendFeed (as we're told by Facebook) updates are almost like a Twitter stream: you can see your most recent status updates and the updates of your friends. Facebook Lite however removes many of the bells and whistles from the full-fledged version and keeps only the basics THIS IS WHAT YOU (GLADLY) MISS: 1. Omission of third-party applications 2. No birthdays 3. No contacts 4. No real-time updates - All Gone WHAT IS STILL THERE: 1. Although the status and sharing interface is present, you can't view wall-to-wall posts or invite friends to an event 2. There is a left-hand navigation with four main categories: Wall, Info, Friends, and Photos & Videos. VERDICT: Optimized for slower connections and mobile devices, absence of annoying third-party apps, less clutter.... My opinion, it works perfectly for us Minimalist and 'Zen'-folk. It bears a strong resemblance to other sharing platforms like FriendFeed or Twitter and Facebook’s News Feed — imagine all of those magically inserted into your Gmail inbox. 4. It has all the makings of a powerful, real-time social platform and is ready to compete with the established players. hopefully it's beginning to feel more social (you're getting followed more) with more people using it. 5. A serious limitation, though, is that you can’t use it to post to your favorite social networks. You can add feeds from Twitter, Flickr, Google Reader and any other social site (EXCEPT for Facebook) all of which is combined into a single feed on Buzz where your friends can leave comments. But when you post a status update or share any sort of link or media on Buzz, you don’t have the option to CC Twitter or FriendFeed. 6. As Web designers, we may be inclined to think that our inspiration should only come from the online domain, right? Wrong. Over the years I have incorporated into my web projects, inspiration picked up form more traditional sources (print tv, radio) as well as the not so traditional sources. To stream or not to stream?
An article I read a couple of days ago, in the Guardian (online), on filesharing trends stated 'online Downloads' were on the decline with 'online Streaming' on the ascent. Same old drift, right? Well it managed to set me off reflecting and thinking. Recently I have been reminiscing on my old obsession with some of my favorite English TV 'classics', and believe me; I use the word 'classic' in the 'excellence' rather than the 'archaic' sense of the word. My routine after an exhausting day of University or work or even if it wasn't very taxing: I'd make a pit-stop by the pub, detour to pickup my favorite Chinese take-away, then rush home and 'veg' out in front of the 'idiot box'. The marathon usually began with "Weakest Link", yep Ann was my hero, and then I'd catch other shows, the most memorable of which were "Teachers" and "Green Wing". What I've always loved about English TV is that it is absolutely outrageous while still maintaining the humor and hence for my tastes addictive. Since discovering Hulu, my addiction has come rushing back and needs its fix. According to The Guardian report , although torrent file sharing of music (downloading) was down in the UK among teens aged 14 to 18 year olds, media streaming was on the increase. I thought to myself that this is a true reflection of our times. With the availability of decent internet speeds, why should an option of convenience, as found in streaming, not be preferred waits in download queues, wrong-file downloads and the 'very real' potential of virus infections. In my opinion streaming is the way forward simply for the following reasons: It is convenient, after all we are a people obsessed with convenience and who more so than teenagers who have so much to do and so little time. Also media streaming, if acquired through the right channel, adds a check in the ethical box by raising revenue for content providers via the inclusion of (not too intrusive, if I might say so) advertisement. Why spend hours illegally downloading your TV or music (with all the hassle described above attached), when Hulu, Lastfm and other like service, offer the option to watch TV, Movies or listen to your music of choice conveniently without the need for 'illegal' activity. Remember it is illegal, so when you rip your next CD or DVD, think of the investment which is put into the projects, switch roles with the artists and (just maybe) you might be put off. As I stated before I love streaming and all the lifestyle benefits associated with it. Hulu and Lastfm are my staples at the moment. Hulu is pretty smart too as it continues my viewing from where I stopped in the previous session. Are you still using torrent sites or are you streaming?
